How Can We Manage Non-Renewable Resources?

September 27, 2019 Off By Tristan

It is important to learn and apply different strategies for managing non-renewable resources. These types of resources are easy to deplete. What is more, there lacks a substantive way of replacing them. Many times, they also don’t have better or equally helpful alternatives. Because of this, everybody needs to learn how to manage such resources. Below are a few ideas worth implementing to manage these resources.

Embracing Mass Transportation

Most vehicles you see on the roads today would never be able to move an inch without fossil fuel. Globally, more than a billion cars are on the road. These cars consume huge volumes of fuel, thus causing a depletion of one of the earth’s most critical non-renewable resource. All these vehicles then cause massive carbon footprints. A better approach is to embrace mass transportation in buses and trains. The continued reliance on personal cars needs to stop.

Embracing Hybrid Vehicles

Technology has introduced hybrid vehicles. Some people are not too enthusiastic about the idea of traveling in mass transportation. In this regard, hybrid vehicles sound like a good idea to them. Many globally recognized brands have increased their production of hybrid cars. They are doing this because the cars seem to be the future of the auto industry. What is more, such cars present several benefits, which include:

  1. They are environmentally friendly
  2. They offer huge financial benefits
  3. They reduce overdependence on fossil fuels
  4. They feature regenerative braking systems
  5. They are built using light materials
  6. They offer higher resale value

Reducing Heating Needs

In managing natural gas, which is one of the world’s most critical non-renewable resources, one also needs to talk about the importance of reducing heating needs. Roughly, 25 percent of the Americans use natural gas in heating their living spaces. In such cases, they can all manage this resource better by ensuring that the thermostat remains at 70 degrees. Similarly, the heating system needs shutting off whenever it is not in use. Other measures include:

  1. Increasing the efficiency of the stove-top
  2. Optimizing the efficiency of water heating systems

Reducing Lighting

Coal and uranium are another set of the most important non-renewable resources on earth. In the United State, the former is responsible for supplying around 50% of what the country uses as electrical energy. Sadly, the demand for coal is on the rise, which then threatens its availability. To this end, a few strategies are necessary to ensure proper and effective management of what could soon run out. These strategies include installing:

  • low-energy bulbs
  • compact fluorescent bulbs
  • cold cathode fluorescent bulbs
  • LED light bulbs

Additionally, uranium is critical for the production of nuclear energy. However, the process that leads to the production of this form of energy often leads to the emission of radioactive byproducts. Currently, efforts are being made to introduce laws, policies, and strategies that allow for the recovery and recycling of uranium’s byproduct energy. Similarly, the same efforts have gone into finding solutions for the problem of nuclear waste.

Putting More Focus on Renewable Resources

Now that it is clear non-renewable resources are dwindling, it is more prudent for humanity to seek ways of using renewable resources more. Two of the most effective renewable resources to use in place of the non-renewable options include the sun and wind. In future, it would be better to embrace wind energy via windmills for the production of all the energy needed for homes and industries. Energy from renewable resources is just as effective in:

  • Heating water
  • Cooking food
  • Generating electricity

In conclusion, there are several options and solutions worth implementing to manage non-renewable resources better. Non-renewable resources are not easy to replenish. Nevertheless, with a few strategies in place and a commitment to take the little we have better, it is possible to keep these resources in place for the present and future generations. A nice place to start is by implementing the non-renewable resources management measures listed above.
